With this adapter and the cooling block you provide your rear differential with headwind cooling as standard on all M-Models. Highly recommended for cars that are used for sports to prevent the differential from overheating from wearing out faster and the oil seals from leaking.
By keeping the oil temperature lower it burns less quickly and lubrication remains optimal. This is especially important with a limited slip differential. The locking mechanism (regardless of the type of locking) is in fact made to generate friction with heat as a by-product. At high temperatures, important additives in the oil disintegrate and only the base oil remains functional. As a result, the lubrication becomes less good, and the differential will therefore become even hotter.
Internally in the differential, the oil flushes continuously along the aluminum cover by rotating the mechanism. Our cooler is fixed in the lid by a specially made copper bolt (42cm2 surface). Because copper conducts heat optimally (2x as much as aluminum), this is passed on to the aluminum cooling block as much as possible. All heat in the cover and cooling fins is extracted from the oil in the differential. By cooling the lid, the oil inside is thus cooled. It may be useful to insulate the longitudinal exhaust with a heat wrap.
ATTENTION! There are 2 models differential cover supplied on these cars. Threaded lids and non-threaded lids. The latter without thread requires a 10mm drill and an M12x1.5 tap. (In principle, this can be done under the car without having to disassemble the differential). We can also supply a screw-threaded lid for 105.00 incl VAT.
The cooling block can be mounted in 2 ways, with the fins forward or backward. We recommend applying thermal paste between the adapter and the differential cover for best results.
It may be necessary to remove the BMW vibration damper before mounting. We have done this a number of times without noticing any consequences and you save about 3kg in weight.
